Water Restored to Paterson’s Riverside After 42-Inch Main Rupture as Boil Advisories Persist

Officials blame century-old pipes, with major replacements slated to begin in the coming months.

Overview

  • Passaic Valley Water Commission isolated the break at North 1st Street and Arch and restored flow to most Riverside customers by Monday.
  • Boil-water advisories remain for parts of Paterson outside the lifted area and Prospect Park, as well as customers served by the Manchester Utilities Authority in Haledon and North Haledon.
  • Parts of Fair Lawn reported continued outages and are under a boil advisory, and some residents described discolored or muddy water as lines were recharged.
  • The weekend rupture left up to 18,000 customers with little or no pressure, and officials have not provided a timeline for full restoration or lifting all advisories.
  • PVWC attributes the failure primarily to 120–140-year-old mains and says hundreds of millions in upgrades will start in six to nine months and take years to complete.
