Watchdog Probes Death After Sydney Domestic Violence Arrest as Separate Case Leaves Woman Dead

Police declared a critical incident with LECC oversight after the arrested man died following hospital transfer.

Overview

  • Police were called to a Lurnea home about 4:05pm Friday and found a 58-year-old woman with serious head injuries who was taken to Liverpool Hospital.
  • A 60-year-old man, alleged to be the woman's husband, was arrested later in nearby Sadleir, treated by paramedics for taking prohibited drugs, briefly handcuffed, then uncuffed at ambulance staff request before he died at Westmead Hospital.
  • A weapon was found at the Lurnea scene, and the investigation will be overseen by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission and Professional Standards Command with a report to be prepared for the coroner.
  • In a separate Northern Rivers incident just before midnight Friday, a woman in her 20s was found dead in a Mullumbimby unit and a 29-year-old man was arrested at the scene and taken to Byron Bay Police Station.
  • The fresh cases land as the state's crime bureau reports more than 38,000 domestic-violence assault incidents in NSW between July 2024 and June 2025.
