Washington Post: Jim Irsay Relapsed and Received Opioids and Ketamine in His Final Years

The investigation raises questions because his treating physician signed the death certificate and no autopsy or toxicology was performed.

Overview

  • Irsay’s relapse was detailed by five people with direct knowledge, four of whom said they witnessed ketamine injections, and supported by prescription records, flight data and law-enforcement documents.
  • He experienced three overdoses since 2020: an airlift from Turks and Caicos in February 2020, a suspected overdose at his Carmel-area home in December 2023, and another 12 days later at a Miami-area resort that led to a nearly four-month hospitalization.
  • California addiction specialist Dr. Harry Haroutunian treated Irsay, prescribing opioids and administering ketamine, and later signed his death certificate listing cardiac arrest due to acute pneumonia and heart conditions.
  • Irsay died May 21, 2025, in a Beverly Hills hotel suite; police reported no signs of foul play or overdose at the scene, and authorities did not conduct an autopsy or toxicology tests.
  • The Post’s findings contradict public explanations from Irsay and the Colts, which attributed his health issues to a severe respiratory illness, heart failure and recovery from back surgery; his daughters declined interviews and requested privacy.
