Washington Governor Signs Executive Order for Generative AI Guidelines

Washington Governor Jay Inslee has signed an executive order to develop guidelines for the use of generative AI in state operations.
The order directs state officials to identify potential generative AI initiatives and set guidelines for procurement, use, and monitoring of the technology.
Inslee's order also calls for an examination of the impact of generative AI on vulnerable communities, the state’s workforce, and potential education-related opportunities.
New proposed legislation in Washington state, SB 5838 and HB 1934, would establish a task force to assess current uses and trends in AI and make recommendations to the legislature regarding standards and regulation.
Inslee's order is the 10th of its kind in the US, with similar orders previously issued in California, Seattle, New York City, and by the White House.
