Washington Capitals and Wizards Could Relocate to Northern Virginia
Monumental Sports and Entertainment and Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin announce $2 billion development plan, pending multiple state and local approvals.
- Monumental Sports and Entertainment, the parent company of the NHL’s Washington Capitals and NBA’s Washington Wizards, has reached a nonbinding agreement to move the teams from their home in downtown D.C. to a future arena in Northern Virginia.
- The proposed move is part of a $2 billion development plan in Alexandria, Virginia, announced by Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin.
- The new arena would be built next to the Potomac Yard Metro station at the northern end of Alexandria and is planned to open in 2028.
- The overall project includes more than an arena. It would include a separate, smaller performing arts venue, underground parking, a conference center, a Wizards practice facility and Monumental’s corporate offices and media studio.
- The deal still needs multiple state and local approvals to go forward. The Virginia General Assembly would need to create a sports and entertainment authority, which would own the arena, and approve additional funds for transportation in the area.
