Warren Upton, Oldest Pearl Harbor Survivor and USS Utah Crew Member, Dies at 105

Upton, who survived the 1941 attack and helped save a fellow sailor, passed away on Christmas Day in California following a brief illness.

  • Warren 'Red' Upton, the oldest living survivor of Pearl Harbor and the last crew member of the USS Utah, died on December 25, 2024, at age 105 in Los Gatos, California.
  • Upton was aboard the USS Utah when it was struck by two Japanese torpedoes during the Pearl Harbor attack, forcing him to abandon ship and swim to safety while assisting a fellow sailor who could not swim.
  • The USS Utah sank within minutes, killing 58 crew members, and Upton later took cover on Ford Island as Japanese planes strafed the area.
  • Upton continued to serve as a Navy radioman during World War II and later married Gene, a former Navy nurse; they raised five children before her passing in 2018.
  • With Upton's death, only 15 known survivors of the Pearl Harbor attack remain out of the estimated 87,000 military personnel stationed on Oahu that day.
