Warner Bros. Discovery to Charge Legacy HBO Max Users Extra $4/Month for 4K Content and Limits Concurrent Streams

The change, effective from December 5, comes six months after Warner Bros. Discovery promised no disruptions for customers on the legacy 4K HDR plan; Subscribers will have to upgrade to the “ultimate” plan for $20 per month to retain 4K and HDR streaming and access to four concurrent streams.

  • Starting December 5, Warner Bros. Discovery will charge Legacy HBO Max users an extra $4/month for 4K content by switching them to the 'ultimate' plan. The previous subscription cost of $16/month will remain the same, but 4K and HDR streaming, along with access to four concurrent streams, will be available only for 'Ultimate' plan users.
  • The upcoming changes follow a six-month agreement where Warner Bros. Discovery promised no changes would be made to customers on the legacy 4K HDR plan. All alterations were communicated to subscribers via the email.
  • Legacy users on the $16 per month ad-free plan will be limited to HD quality streams and streaming on only two devices simultaneously. The changes are being presented as a move to align the legacy tier with the new Max Ad-Free tier.
  • For subscribers wanting access to 4K content, Warner Bros. Discovery is marketing its 'Ultimate Ad-Free' subscription which also allows subscribers to stream on up to four devices at once and offers 100 downloads compared to the 30 downloads available on the ad-free plan.
  • The move comes amidst a trend where many streaming services are raising their subscription prices, while at the same time limiting features offered in their plans. This suggests that Warner Bros. Discovery may be enticing customers to upgrade their subscriptions to receive more features.
