Warner Bros. Discovery and Google have partnered to introduce AI-generated closed captions for the Max streaming platform.
The new tool, called 'caption AI,' is built on Google's Vertex AI platform and will first be applied to unscripted programming like news and reality TV.
The AI technology is expected to reduce captioning costs by up to 50% and cut the time required to create captions by up to 80%.
Human transcribers will still be needed to check the AI-generated captions for accuracy, ensuring high-quality output.
The move comes as Warner Bros. Discovery seeks to bolster its competitive position in the streaming market, following a recent multi-year distribution agreement with Charter Communications.
