Warminster Man Detained on Federal Explosives Charges Linked to Delran SUV Bombing

Surveillance video helped trace the July 26 bombing targeting his former supervisor’s SUV to Michael Patrick Takacs Jr., whose detention followed his arrest

Overview

  • The U.S. Attorney’s Office in New Jersey charged Takacs with one count of transporting an explosive device to intimidate or damage property, one count of interstate explosive transportation and two counts of unlawful possession of an explosive device
  • On July 26 at 2:42 a.m. an improvised explosive detonated under a silver Ford Explorer in Delran, New Jersey, creating a 100-foot debris field and driving nails and bolts into nearby vehicles and homes
  • Investigators say surveillance footage captured a dark-colored Jeep Renegade parking across the street as an individual placed the device near the SUV and later remotely detonated it while speeding away
  • Court documents state Takacs lacked required permits, purchased matching detonators online weeks before the blast and took a screenshot of a map showing his former supervisor’s residence in early June
  • Following an August 7 initial appearance before U.S. Magistrate Judge Matthew J. Skahill, Takacs was ordered detained pending trial after a multijurisdictional probe led by the FBI and New Jersey law enforcement partners
