Overview

  • With 370 MW now online, Waratah has become the largest operational battery energy storage system in Australia.
  • The facility occupies the former Munmorah coal-fired station site across eight Australian Rules football fields and houses over 3,500 battery containers.
  • An integrated System Integrity Protection Scheme monitors 36 transmission lines in real time and triggers rapid power injections to counter grid faults.
  • During summer testing, the battery supplied emergency power to shore up NSW’s network when demand surged, acting as a dynamic stabiliser.
  • By year-end, the installation will double output to 850 MW/1,680 MWh to firm renewables and exert downward pressure on wholesale electricity prices.
