  • Roughly 1,100 eligible voters on Wangerooge are casting ballots today to end the vacancy created by the previous mayor’s 2023 resignation.
  • Six contenders are vying for the office, including FDP candidate Thomas Commichau and four independents: Peter Bünting, Werner Götz, Stefan Kruse and Tina Mißmahl.
  • The CDU, SPD and Greens generated almost 600 applications through an open recruitment process before nominating treasurer Sven Janisch as their joint candidate.
  • The elected mayor will serve an eight-year term overseeing the remote island’s municipal administration.
  • No winner will be declared before Sunday evening, and a runoff will be triggered if no candidate secures over 50 percent of the vote.
