Walmart Will Remove Synthetic Dyes and 30 Additives From All U.S. Store Brands by 2027

The move answers customer demand under voluntary pressure from federal health officials.

Overview

  • The overhaul covers roughly 1,000 items across Great Value, Marketside, Freshness Guaranteed and bettergoods, with about 90% already free of synthetic dyes.
  • Reformulated foods will begin appearing within months, with a full transition targeted for January 2027.
  • Besides dyes, Walmart will drop about 30 ingredients such as certain preservatives, artificial sweeteners and fat substitutes, though some on the list are already banned or rarely used.
  • The retailer joins Kraft Heinz, General Mills and others in responding to customer preferences and federal guidance urging a voluntary phaseout of petroleum-based dyes, while pledging to shield shoppers from higher prices.
  • Company scientists and suppliers are testing natural colorants to maintain taste and texture, acknowledging challenges like less vibrant hues and dye-free sports drinks.
