Walmart to Remove Synthetic Dyes and 31 Additives From Its Store Brands

The retailer frames the shift as a clean-label response to consumer demand under growing federal scrutiny of artificial colorants.

Overview

  • Walmart’s commitment applies to its private-label lines Great Value, Marketside, Freshness Guaranteed, and Better Goods.
  • Eleven dyes slated for removal include FD&C Blue 1 and 2, Green 3, Red 3, Red 4, Red 40, Yellow 5 and 6, Citrus Red, Orange B, and canthaxanthin.
  • Walmart says changes will roll out in the coming months as suppliers reformulate products, conduct testing, and update labeling.
  • Beyond colorants, 31 targeted substances include titanium dioxide, azodicarbonamide, bromates, phthalates, nitrites, talc, toluene, morpholine, and various parabens.
  • The initiative tracks a wider industry shift away from artificial additives and a proposal by HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to remove eight dyes by late 2026.
