Walmart Expands Light-Up Digital Shelf Labels Across U.S. Stores

The LED features aim to speed in-store shopping with price updates kept centralized.

Overview

  • Walmart is rolling out three LED functions called Shop to Light, Pick to Light and Stock to Light that flash built-in LEDs on digital shelf labels to help customers and employees locate items in stores.
  • The company says more than 4,300 U.S. stores already have digital shelf labels and it expects installation across the chain by year-end to support holiday traffic.
  • Shop to Light has registered roughly 5 million customer-initiated flashes during limited rollouts, according to Walmart, and the same flashing feature has been used by associates and delivery drivers to speed picking and stocking.
  • Walmart says prices are updated centrally, typically overnight, under human oversight and the CEO issued a public pledge not to use customer data for personalized pricing even as some states and advocacy groups push restrictions.
  • The label rollout is part of a broader technology push that includes AI tools, RFID and automated supply-chain work, a move Walmart says will free associates to spend more time with customers but that will keep the company under ongoing regulatory scrutiny.
