Overview
- Walmart, which began enabling Tap-to-Pay on Monday, Aug. 24, has activated the feature at select Walmart and Sam’s Club locations and says it will reach all U.S. stores and clubs by the end of 2026.
- The rollout will extend to Walmart and Sam’s Club fuel stations by mid-2027 and customers can add eligible Walmart, Sam’s Club and OnePay cards to mobile wallets.
- Reporting and vendor confirmations indicate major digital wallets such as Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay will be accepted at contactless readers.
- Walmart will keep its QR-based Walmart Pay and Sam’s Club Scan & Go options, and the company has not published a store-by-store or state-level schedule for when locations will get Tap-to-Pay.
- Security experts say modern contactless payments use tokenization to send one-time encrypted codes instead of real card numbers, and the change closes a gap between Walmart and rivals that added tap-to-pay years earlier.
