Walker Dies After Cardiac Arrest While Descending Tryfan in Eryri

OVMRO logged its 129th call-out of the year during a run of Tryfan incidents in August.

Overview

  • The walker collapsed near Llyn Bochlwyd on August 23 during the descent, and efforts by fellow hikers and Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue volunteers could not revive them.
  • The deceased has not been publicly named, and the casualty was recovered from the mountain following the failed resuscitation attempts.
  • OVMRO said the response was its 129th call-out of 2025 and its sixth visit to the Tryfan area this month.
  • Later that evening, rescuers conducted a complex night operation on Tryfan’s Pinnacle Rib, lowering a team member about 300ft from the north ridge to reach two stuck climbers and raising them to safe ground by 6am.
  • Five days earlier, a separate Tryfan rescue saw a lead climber with a suspected fractured ankle winched by a Coastguard helicopter to Ysbyty Gwynedd after a fall on Grooved Arete.
