Walker County House Fire Kills LaFayette High Teacher, Injures Wife and Two Children

Officials launched a cause-of-fire investigation with an autopsy planned to determine the teacher’s exact cause of death.

  • Dispatchers received a 7:38 a.m. report of smoke at 127 Ridgewood Circle near Chickamauga on Sunday.
  • Firefighters arrived about nine minutes later and encountered heavy smoke and flames at the front of the home.
  • Crews conducted a search-and-rescue and found John Millican III unconscious in a back bedroom before transporting him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
  • Heather Millican and their children, ages 3 and 8, escaped and were taken to Vanderbilt Burn Center in Nashville for treatment of serious injuries.
  • The house is considered a total loss, and both adults are LaFayette educators with John at the high school and Heather teaching social studies at the middle school.
