Wales Launches £1 Bus Fares for 16–21s in Government Pilot

Backed by £15m over two years, the pilot requires a free mytravelpass for proof of age.

Overview

  • From 1 September, eligible passengers can buy £1 single tickets and £3 day passes on participating Welsh bus services, with validity also covering trips to the first stop in England when a journey begins or ends in Wales.
  • Young people must register for the free mytravelpass to verify eligibility, with tickets available from drivers or mobile apps and a tap-on/tap-off option planned by Transport for Wales.
  • The Welsh Government is funding the pilot with £15m over two financial years as part of a budget deal supported by Welsh Liberal Democrats leader Jane Dodds.
  • Ministers plan a further £7m in November to extend the scheme to younger children, with precise age eligibility to be confirmed.
  • Transport for Wales reports more than 10,000 mytravelpass applications ahead of the launch, indicating strong early interest.
