Wales Extends £1 Bus Fares To Ages 5–21 In Year-Long Pilot

The UK government has ruled out a free under-22 trial on cost grounds.

Overview

  • From 3 November, the discounted fares expand to children aged 5–15, making the scheme available to everyone aged 5–21 across Wales.
  • Single tickets cost £1 and day tickets £3 on participating local buses.
  • Young people aged 16–21 must show a free mytravelpass, while those aged 5–15 do not need a pass.
  • Tickets are valid for journeys that begin or end in Wales, with cross-border acceptance limited by operator; the offer excludes National Express, Megabus, FlixBus, premium night and City Sightseeing services, and Tap In/Tap Out is not supported.
  • Ministers report nearly 250,000 discounted journeys and over 26,000 mytravelpass applications since September, with the pilot scheduled to run until August 2026.
