Wajima Fish Seller Vows to Rebuild After Devastating Earthquake

Yoshie Minamidani, undeterred by the extensive damage, is rallying others to restart their businesses and revive the community.

  • Yoshie Minamidani, a fish seller in Wajima, Japan, is determined to rebuild her business and community after a 7.6 magnitude earthquake on New Year's Day left at least 202 people dead, scores missing, and buildings in shambles.
  • Minamidani's seafood store was among the buildings destroyed, but she has already begun plans to restart her fish business in nearby Kanazawa city with about a dozen others from Wajima.
  • Of the deaths, 81 were in Wajima, and Suzu had 91, while 102 people are still unaccounted for, and 565 people were injured. Over 1,400 homes were destroyed or seriously damaged in Ishikawa Prefecture.
  • Evacuation centers are currently housing 30,000 people, and heavy snowfall and more than 1,000 aftershocks have increased the risk of further landslides.
  • Minamidani has posted a video of the damage on YouTube, hoping to attract donations to help rebuild, and invites people from all over the world to visit Wajima once it has recovered.
