Wagenknecht Steps Down as BSW Leader, Backs New Double Leadership and Rebrand Ahead of December Vote

The founder moves to a values role to reframe strategy following sliding polls.

Overview

  • Sahra Wagenknecht said she will not seek the federal chair again and will instead set up and lead a new BSW Grundwertekommission to be created at the December party congress.
  • Amira Mohamed Ali and Fabio De Masi are proposed to take over as co-leaders, with the leadership slate to be decided on 6–7 December in Magdeburg.
  • The party proposes keeping the BSW acronym while renaming the long form to “Bündnis Soziale Gerechtigkeit und Wirtschaftliche Vernunft,” with an alternative from Rhineland-Palatinate also to be put to delegates.
  • Wagenknecht said that if a recount ultimately seats the party in the Bundestag, she would seek to lead the parliamentary group, as the BSW continues to press for vote rechecks.
  • In Brandenburg, the BSW caucus plans to oppose two media-state treaties tied to a broadcast reform, SPD leaders seek a unified vote, Wagenknecht insists the coalition should continue, and CDU support suggests the treaties will likely pass.
