WADA Chief Urges U.S. to Halt Enhanced Games Over Athlete Safety Risks

Unable to bar the privately funded Las Vegas meet, the agency is appealing for U.S. political and financial pressure.

Overview

  • WADA president Witold Banka called the Enhanced Games "dangerous" and "irresponsible" and urged USADA and U.S. politicians to act to prevent it.
  • Banka said WADA lacks jurisdiction to stop the event and pressed U.S. bodies to lobby its financiers and take a stronger public stance.
  • The competition is scheduled for May 2026 at Resorts World in Las Vegas and will operate outside the WADA Code under U.S. FDA rules, permitting many substances WADA bans.
  • Private backers include 1789 Capital, whose partners include Donald Trump Jr., and organizers are advertising $250,000 bonuses for world records and $1 million for marquee sprint events.
  • Athlete signings include Olympic medallist Ben Proud and world champion sprinter Fred Kerley, while USADA chief Travis Tygart has previously derided the concept as a "clown show."
