WA Sets December 8 Rollout for Tap-and-Go Payments on Perth Public Transport

The upgrade follows trials and years of delays, adding flexibility for occasional users while SmartRider discounts continue for regular commuters.

Overview

  • Passengers will be able to tag on and off with bank cards, phones and smartwatches across Perth buses, trains and ferries from December 8.
  • Contactless fares will be charged at the cash rate and will not receive SmartRider discounts, with the state absorbing transaction fees.
  • SmartRider cards remain in use with up to about 20% discounted fares, and the minister expects roughly 10% of riders to switch initially.
  • The rollout extends to Bunbury, Busselton, Kalgoorlie, Esperance and Albany on December 8, with Geraldton, Karratha and Port Hedland to follow later in the month.
  • The program, flagged by the Auditor-General for time and cost blowouts, has risen to about $68 million with more than 4,000 new readers installed after successful trials.
