Overview
- Passengers will be able to tag on and off with bank cards, phones and smartwatches across Perth buses, trains and ferries from December 8.
- Contactless fares will be charged at the cash rate and will not receive SmartRider discounts, with the state absorbing transaction fees.
- SmartRider cards remain in use with up to about 20% discounted fares, and the minister expects roughly 10% of riders to switch initially.
- The rollout extends to Bunbury, Busselton, Kalgoorlie, Esperance and Albany on December 8, with Geraldton, Karratha and Port Hedland to follow later in the month.
- The program, flagged by the Auditor-General for time and cost blowouts, has risen to about $68 million with more than 4,000 new readers installed after successful trials.
