VW Cements EV Lead in Germany as 2025 Data Show Mercedes Slide and Global Strains

Fresh tallies show Germany's EV market rebounded despite falling deliveries in China and the United States.

Overview

  • Volkswagen Group delivered about 8.98–8.99 million vehicles in 2025, down roughly 0.5% year over year, while global BEV deliveries rose 32% to around 983,100, or nearly 11% of its total.
  • Germany recorded 2.86 million new-car registrations in 2025 (+1.4%), with 545,142 battery-electric cars (about 19% share), as VW led BEVs with more than 102,000 units and the ID.7 topped the model rankings.
  • Mercedes-Benz reported about 2.16 million vehicles (cars and vans) in 2025, a drop of around 10%, with passenger-car BEVs down about 9% to roughly 168,800, despite late-year momentum linked to the new CLA.
  • SUVs gained significant ground in Germany, reaching roughly 1.26 million combined SUV and off-road registrations for about 44.2% market share, while the compact segment shrank.
  • Executives cited fierce competition in China and higher U.S. import tariffs plus reduced U.S. EV support as key drags, as Chinese brands expanded rapidly in Germany, led by BYD (~23,306, ~+700%) and Leapmotor (~7,280, ~+4,000%).
