Vueling to Cut 82 Jobs at Rome Fiumicino as It Trims Fleet and Routes

The carrier frames the move as an optimization to build a leaner operation in a highly competitive market.

Overview

  • The IAG-owned airline has opened a collective dismissal procedure at its Rome base, identifying 82 of 122 staff as redundant.
  • Based aircraft at Fiumicino will be reduced from four to three and five direct routes will be dropped to Paris Orly, London Gatwick, Malaga, Valencia and Santorini.
  • The proposed reductions cover 14 captains, 12 first officers and 56 cabin crew, with 40 employees expected to remain in Rome from February 2026.
  • Vueling says it will start talks with Italian unions in the coming days, as Filt Cgil condemns the plan and contests the company's stance on using social safety nets.
  • Florence staff are currently reported as unaffected, and industry data show Vueling’s Italy capacity is slightly lower than 2024 and 27% below 2018.
