Overview
- The IEC said the final registration weekend produced about 1.7 million interactions and pushed the national voters’ roll past 29 million after the two weekend drives in June and the weekend of 1–2 August.
- Cooperative Governance Minister Velenkosini Hlabisa will proclaim the election date on Friday 7 August, a step that will close the roll at midnight on proclamation day and require the IEC to publish binding election timetables.
- The IEC keeps online registration open, has added a WhatsApp registration channel, and says citizens may register or update details at local offices until the roll closes on proclamation day.
- Women and younger people drove much of the uptake with women accounting for 56% of weekend activity and people aged 16–29 making up 26% of transactions and 46% of new registrations.
- With registration finished the commission will shift to nominations, printing more than 70 million ballots and turnout planning while warning that voters may only cast ballots at the voting station where they are registered so address accuracy is critical.
