Volvo Revives XC70 as China-First Long-Range Plug-In Hybrid

Volvo is using a China-first launch to court drivers who want EV-like range without ditching gasoline.

The Volvo XC70 comes with a strong hybrid powertrain that enables an electric driving range of over 200 km.

Overview

  • Pre-orders are open in China with pricing from ¥446,900 (about $62,500).
  • The lineup offers 21.2 kWh and 39.6 kWh batteries, with up to 72 miles and 112 miles of WLTC electric range respectively, and Volvo cites over 124 miles on China’s CLTC for the larger pack.
  • The XC70 supports DC fast charging from 0% to 80% in roughly 23 minutes and includes bidirectional vehicle-to-load capability.
  • Variants range from a 314 hp front-drive model to a 456 hp all-wheel-drive version that does 0–62 mph in 5.3 seconds; combined driving range is quoted at over 745 miles.
  • Europe will follow at a later stage, while U.S. sales are unlikely due to Chinese production and high import tariffs.
