Overview
- One month after the quake, local centers report a major backlog: Yatsushiro has more than 2,000 unaddressed resident requests and nearly 900 houses damaged.
- Volunteer capacity is stretched with about 150 volunteers in Yatsushiro able to handle only 20–30 requests per day while new requests arrive at roughly 70–80 daily.
- Kumamoto launched disaster‑volunteer buses on Aug. 29 to ease travel and broaden participation, and the prefecture is stepping up online recruitment.
- Miyagi Prefecture will send four-person public health teams to Yatsushiro starting Sept. 1 on weekly rotations and Sendai will dispatch three teams through September.
- Officials warn volunteer numbers may dwindle as recovery drags on and note that staff experience helped set up centers quickly but will not by itself close the growing gap in help for residents.
