Volunteer Divers Remove Sunken PT Cruiser With Human Remains at Cedar Beach

The remains are being examined by the Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s Office for positive identification following a suspected link to missing man Robert Long.

Exploring With a Mission, a sonar dive team that searches for missing people in vehicles, was out looking for several people on Long Island when they said they turned their focus to a 15-year-old case on the North Shore of Suffolk County. The crew said they went out about 50 yards from the harbor's shore when they discovered the car. (Exploring With a Mission via Facebook)

  • Suffolk County Police Marine Bureau divers recovered additional human remains after the vehicle was craned from the water around 2 p.m. on July 1.
  • Detectives have notified Robert Long’s family of a possible match but await DNA confirmation and an autopsy to establish identity and cause of death.
  • Authorities have found no signs of foul play in the submerged vehicle following Detective Lt. Kevin Beyrer’s review of recovery items.
  • The volunteer divers plan to expand their sonar-based search operations to other waterways across Long Island and the East Coast in pursuit of cold-case leads.
