Volunteer Divers Recover Human Remains From Sunken PT Cruiser Off Cedar Beach

The remains sit with the medical examiner pending identification following the latest PT Cruiser recovery

Exploring With a Mission, a sonar dive team that searches for missing people in vehicles, was out looking for several people on Long Island when they said they turned their focus to a 15-year-old case on the North Shore of Suffolk County. The crew said they went out about 50 yards from the harbor's shore when they discovered the car. (Exploring With a Mission via Facebook)

Overview

  • Side-scan sonar deployed by Rhode Island-based Exploring With a Mission and partner Adventures With a Purpose located a barnacle-covered Chrysler PT Cruiser about 55 yards from Cedar Beach late Monday
  • Volunteer divers entered the submerged vehicle around 7:30 p.m. and brought a bone fragment to the surface before calling 911
  • Suffolk County Police Marine Bureau divers raised the car just after 2 p.m. Tuesday and recovered additional human remains for transfer to the Medical Examiner’s Office
  • Detective Lt. Kevin Beyrer said the vehicle matches the description of Robert Long’s missing 2010 PT Cruiser but that formal identification is pending and no criminality is suspected
  • The dive teams plan to spend the coming weeks searching Long Island and other East Coast waterways for as many as 50 submerged vehicles tied to cold missing-person cases
