Volkswagen’s Mission Efficiency Sets New Benchmarks for Electric Efficiency

The near‑production MEB+ prototype demonstrates large range and drag gains using production-derived components as Volkswagen presents the car as a technology demonstrator not a production model.

  • Volkswagen unveiled the Mission Efficiency on Monday, showing a near-production prototype built on the MEB+ architecture to prove how much energy modern EV hardware can save.
  • The company reported a record drag coefficient of 0.158 achieved with a boat-tail body, rear wheel fairings, closed underbody, recessed door handles and narrow 155 mm tires.
  • In road testing the prototype logged a single-charge segment of 663 km and a full Wolfsburg–Vienna run of 1,278.36 km with measured consumptions of 6.48 kWh/100 km at a constant 68 km/h and 7.51 kWh/100 km on the long route including charging losses.
  • Mission Efficiency uses production-derived parts — a front APP290 motor and a 54.9 kWh net NMC cell-to-pack battery from the ID. Polo family — but pairs them with prototype measures such as CFRP body panels, a rear electromechanical brake, removal of infotainment and a 370 W solar roof.
  • Volkswagen says the car is a demonstrator meant to transfer selected efficiency solutions into future models which could lower real-world energy use and extend range for everyday drivers.
