Volkswagen Unveils Unified EV Battery, Sets Salzgitter Production for Late 2025

The standardized cell is VW’s bid to cut costs through scale to lessen reliance on Asian suppliers.

Overview

  • VW and its battery unit PowerCo presented the “Einheitszelle” at the IAA, planning deployment in up to 80% of the group’s electric models by 2030.
  • Series manufacturing is scheduled to start in Salzgitter by the end of 2025, with LFP lines slated for Valencia from 2027 and a later ramp in St. Thomas, Canada.
  • The format is designed to host multiple chemistries, including NMC, LFP, sodium and a future solid‑state option, within a common construction kit.
  • VW lists targets of roughly 660 Wh/l volumetric energy density and about a 10% gain versus prior cells, with projected ranges up to around 450 km and sub‑25‑minute charging.
  • PowerCo aims for up to 60,000 cells per day in Salzgitter, while projects still use Chinese machinery and the EU has outlined a €1.8 billion Battery Booster to support regional production.
