Volkswagen to invest $20 billion with Canada to build massive battery plant
- Canada and Volkswagen are jointly investing over $20 billion to build a battery gigafactory in Ontario with 90 gigawatt-hours of capacity, the largest in the world for Volkswagen.
- The Canadian and Ontario governments are providing up to $13.7 billion in grants, tax credits and infrastructure support for the project.
- The plant is expected to create up to 3,000 direct jobs and generate over $200 billion for the Canadian economy over the coming decades.
- Production at the St. Thomas, Ontario plant is set to begin in 2027 to provide batteries for over 1 million electric vehicles per year.
- The investment will help Volkswagen meet half its battery demand in Europe and North America through its own production.
