Volkswagen to Develop New EV Platform in China
The German automaker aims to regain market share with entry-level electric vehicles tailored to Chinese consumer preferences.
- Volkswagen is developing a new platform for entry-level electric vehicles (EVs) in China, aiming to regain market share in the world's largest auto market.
- The new platform, known as the A Main Platform, will cater to Chinese consumer preferences regarding battery, electric drive, and motor, and is expected to be ready by 2026.
- Volkswagen plans to introduce four new EV models priced between $19,400 and $23,800 on the new platform, targeting the entry- and mid-level segment of EVs.
- The company has invested around $1.1 billion to build the Volkswagen Group China Technology Company (VCTC), which is developing the platform and will eventually employ over 2,000 people.
- Volkswagen also struck a deal with Chinese EV maker Xpeng Inc in July to boost its EV lineup, with two new models under development that will target mid-level consumers and be produced on an older generation Xpeng platform.
