Volkswagen Launches Seventh-Generation Transporter on Ford Transit Custom Platform
VW pitches a roomier, better-equipped work van with diesel or electric power, factory-approved upfits, published payloads, plus a plug-in hybrid due early 2026.
Overview
- Built in collaboration with Ford, the 2026 Transporter adopts the Transit Custom underpinnings but carries distinct Volkswagen design and tuning.
- Cargo capacity increases to 5.8 m³ (SWB) or 6.8 m³ (LWB) with a load floor up to 3.0 m and a load-through hatch for longer items.
- Official payloads are rated at 1062 kg (SWB 2WD), 1016 kg (LWB 2WD), 963 kg (SWB AWD) and 917 kg (LWB AWD).
- The TDI uses a 2.0‑litre turbo‑diesel (125 kW/390 Nm) with an eight‑speed automatic and either front‑wheel drive or 4Motion all‑wheel drive, with an all‑electric version also offered.
- Pricing starts at $58,590 for the TDI SWB, the LWB costs $2,000 more, and VW backs in dealer-supplied shelving solutions for turnkey fit-outs.
