Volkswagen Delays ID. Buzz U.S. Return to 2028 Model Year

Volkswagen says promised hardware and software upgrades will be bundled into a later launch, leaving pricing and exact timing unclear.

Overview

  • Volkswagen told U.S. dealers on Thursday that the ID. Buzz will skip the 2027 model year and be offered as a 2028 model-year vehicle expected in the first half of 2027.
  • The company says it is not canceling the model and will carry forward specific upgrades reported earlier, including North American Charging Standard support, vehicle-to-load bidirectional charging, a digital key, a Tourer camping trim, two-tone paint and revised steering controls.
  • Weak U.S. demand drove the delay: Volkswagen sold about 6,140 ID. Buzz units in 2025 and online listings show just 38 new 2025 vehicles available nationwide, leaving excess dealer inventory.
  • Market and policy pressures hurt the Buzz’s appeal because it launched with a roughly $60,000 starting price and about 234 miles of range, making it less competitive versus longer-range, lower-cost EV SUVs from rivals like Kia and Hyundai.
  • The pause keeps dealers and buyers in limbo over price and delivery and could push Volkswagen to adjust marketing, production or pricing when it releases more details in the coming months.
