Volkswagen Adopts Classic Nameplates for EVs, Confirms ID. Polo for 2026

The shift aims to leverage familiar badges to ease EV uptake, with the small hatch built in Martorell below €25,000.

Overview

  • Volkswagen said its ID electric range will begin using established model names from 2026, starting with the ID. Polo, which replaces the ID.2all concept.
  • Company chief Thomas Schäfer framed the change as a response to strong customer recognition of names like Polo, while combustion models continue under existing badges.
  • The ID. Polo will be produced at Seat’s Martorell plant on the MEB Entry platform shared with Cupra Raval and Skoda Epiq, with market launch planned for 2026.
  • A performance variant, the ID. Polo GTI, has been confirmed by sales chief Martin Sander for production in 2026.
  • Volkswagen will show an ID. CROSS Concept at IAA Mobility, with a series ID. Cross targeted for late 2026, and design chief Andreas Mind has teased a smaller B‑SUV that reports suggest could be built in Pamplona and priced around €27,000–€30,000.
