Vodafone to Shut Down 2G Voice in Germany by September 2028

The operator says reclaiming 2G spectrum will boost LTE and 5G capacity, especially in rural areas.

Overview

  • The decision accelerates Vodafone’s original timetable by two years.
  • After the switch-off, voice calls on Vodafone will be supported only over 4G (LTE) and 5G.
  • 2G-only handsets will stop working on Vodafone from summer 2028, requiring an upgrade to LTE-capable basic phones or smartphones.
  • A limited 2G service for particularly critical IoT uses will remain until the end of 2030, with dismantling of 2G infrastructure starting in January 2031.
  • Germany’s rollout remains uneven as Deutsche Telekom targets end‑June 2028, Telefónica O2 has not set a date, and 1&1 runs only 5G in its own network while roaming on Vodafone.
