Vodafone Sets September 2028 for 2G Voice Shutdown in Germany, Extends IoT Support to 2030

The move aims to free low‑band spectrum for faster LTE/5G service.

Overview

  • After the switch-off, voice calls will run over LTE and 5G, so customers with 2G‑only phones must migrate to LTE‑capable devices.
  • Vodafone will keep 2G available for particularly critical IoT uses through December 2030, with physical decommissioning starting in January 2031.
  • NG eCall has entered network testing, with broader activation planned for January 2026 to shift vehicle emergency calls to LTE/IP.
  • Vodafone projects about a 10% low‑band capacity gain for LTE/5G from refarmed spectrum and says remaining 2G‑only rural areas will be upgraded before the cutoff.
  • The company reports just over two million 2G devices still active on its network, while Deutsche Telekom targets a June 2028 shutdown and O2 has not set a date.
