Vodafone and AST SpaceMobile Launch SatCo, Choose Germany for EU Satellite Operations Hub

The venture targets sovereign direct-to-phone service from 2026 under ITU filings lodged via Germany.

Overview

  • SatCo, headquartered in Luxembourg, will deploy a Europe-focused constellation to deliver satellite-to-smartphone broadband for commercial users and public protection and disaster relief.
  • The European Satellite Operations Centre will be located near Munich or Hannover, with the final site to be confirmed after negotiations.
  • A dedicated command switch will enable European control over TTC encryption keys, service encryption, and the activation, deactivation, and direction of beams over Europe.
  • AST SpaceMobile has filed through Germany with the ITU to register a new mid-band constellation, and SatCo is seeking EU 2GHz MSS access plus specified PPDR bands subject to national decisions.
  • Mobile operators in 21 EU member states have expressed interest, with commercial service targeted for 2026 using gateways that integrate the constellation with terrestrial 4G/5G networks.
