Overview

  • A 30-year-old man from Randolph, New Jersey, was gored around 9:45 a.m. on June 10 in the Upper Geyser Basin and sustained minor injuries before being treated by emergency medical personnel.
  • This marks the second bison goring in Yellowstone in 2025, following a May incident in the Lake Village area that injured a 47-year-old Florida tourist.
  • Bison have injured more visitors in Yellowstone than any other wild species, with multiple goring cases reported in 2023 and 2024.
  • National Park Service rules require staying at least 25 yards from bison, elk, moose and other large herbivores and 100 yards from bears, wolves and cougars to prevent dangerous encounters.
  • Yellowstone’s herd numbered about 5,400 bison in 2024, animals that can weigh up to 2,000 pounds and run as fast as 30 miles per hour when threatened.
