Virginia Wildlife Officials Link Black Vulture Deaths to Likely H5N1, Ask Public to Report Cases

Reporting thresholds and safety guidance now apply for Southwest Virginia through the DWR hotline or email.

Overview

  • DWR said preliminary tests point to H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza as the likely cause of groups of dead black vultures across Virginia, including in Southwest counties.
  • Residents are asked to report suspected events to 1-855-571-9003 or [email protected] for evaluation by wildlife officials.
  • Reports should be filed for five or more dead vultures, waterfowl, shorebirds, or seabirds in one area within five days; for sick or dead eagles, hawks, owls, or turkeys not found on roads; or for ten or more dead wild birds of other species within five days.
  • People should avoid handling dead birds; if disposal is necessary, use gloves and protective gear, bury or double-bag carcasses for secure trash or landfill, wash hands afterward, and disinfect clothing and shoes.
  • Officials cautioned that fall migration could lead to deaths in other species and urged stronger biosecurity for domestic flocks, including dedicated clothing and keeping birds away from vultures and shared water sources.
