Virginia man dies during Grand Canyon rim-to-rim hike attempt

A 55-year-old Virginia man named Ranjith Varma died while attempting to hike from the South Rim to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon in one day.
Varma became unresponsive on the North Kaibab Trail; bystanders and rangers attempted CPR and other life-saving efforts but were unsuccessful.
The cause of death is still under investigation, but park officials have warned about extreme heat dangers on inner canyon hikes.
This latest incident follows two other deaths earlier this year on Grand Canyon trails attributed to excessive heat.
Park officials advise against hiking the inner canyon between 10am-4pm when temperatures can exceed 120 degrees Fahrenheit.
