Virginia High School Students Protest Transgender Bathroom Policy, Citing Invasion of Privacy and Safety Concerns

Students at Woodgrove High School in Virginia demand a return to male and female only spaces, while the Loudoun County School District states that the controversial bathroom policy allowing transgender students to use bathrooms and locker rooms of their choice is currently under review.

  • About 100 students at Woodgrove High School in Loudoun County, Virginia walked out of school in protest of the district's transgender bathroom policy, Policy 8040, which permits transgender, nonbinary and gender-fluid students to use bathrooms and locker rooms of their choice.
  • The students demand the school district to reverse the policy, citing it as a 'massive safety risk' and an 'invasion of privacy'. They urge for a return to designated male and female spaces.
  • Some female students have reported to stop using the school bathrooms out of fear, with one saying, 'I'm telling you right now half the women in this building feel the same way. We don't use the bathrooms. We hold our pee until we can't.'
  • Meanwhile, male students expressed discomfort in sharing locker rooms with females, with one saying that it goes against what they believe in and that it's an invasion of privacy.
  • The school district has responded that 'Policy 8040 is in review along with the new Model Policies' by the Student Services Committee. However, the district does not give any certain outcomes from the review.
