Virginia Attorney General Opens Probe into Pro-Palestinian Nonprofit Over Fundraising and Alleged Connection to Terrorism

Investigation into AMP's fundraising activities and alleged support for Hamas follows lawsuit claims that the pro-Palestinian group is successor to a defunct organization liable for funding Hamas operatives.

  • Virginia's attorney general, Jason Miyares, has opened an investigation into the American Muslims for Palestine (AMP), a Northern Virginia-based nonprofit. The probe is looking into allegations of potential funding for the terrorist group, Hamas, and violation of state charity laws.
  • The investigation has been triggered by a federal lawsuit claiming that AMP is a successor to a defunct pro-Palestinian group, previously found guilty of supporting Hamas financially. The parents of a man killed by Hamas are seeking for the remaining part of a $156 million civil judgment to be paid by AMP.
  • Miyares' office indicates that there are also suspicions that AMP is soliciting donations without being duly registered with the state's Office of Charitable and Regulatory Programs.
  • The AMP, which carries out educational activities and grassroots campaigns related to Palestine, denies these allegations. It emphasizes that all funds are sourced within the United States and rejects any form of antisemitism.
  • The Council on American-Islizamic Relations criticized the investigation, calling it 'defamatory political posturing' while the Anti-Defamation League regards AMP as a platform for antisemitism and viewer of anti-Israeli sentiments.
