Virgin Media O2 Upgrades Coventry to 4G/5G and Prepares Torquay 3G Shutdown
The operator is contacting customers without 4G/5G devices ahead of Torquay’s August 4 cut-off.
Overview
- O2 turned off 3G in Norwich, Telford and Guildford this week under its phased decommissioning schedule.
- As part of its £700 million Mobile Transformation Plan, O2 upgraded 4G and 5G across more than 2,000 Coventry postcodes at no extra cost to customers.
- Torquay’s 3G network will be shut down on August 4, and O2 plans to complete the UK-wide 3G switch-off by the end of 2025.
- Mobile virtual network operators that rely on O2’s infrastructure, such as Giffgaff, Sky Mobile and Tesco Mobile, will also lose 3G service.
- O2 is proactively contacting customers with 3G-only devices, prioritizing vulnerable users for free or discounted 4G/5G handset upgrades.
