Virgin Australia Launches Pets-in-Cabin Trial on Select MelbourneQueensland Flights

A tightly controlled pilot on two MelbourneQueensland routes will test demand to guide a decision on broader domestic availability next year.

Overview

  • The trial began with VA733 from Melbourne to the Gold Coast carrying four dogs, with the pilot running through January 30, 2026 on MelbourneGold Coast and MelbourneSunshine Coast services.
  • Only small dogs and cats up to 8kg including a soft-sided, leak-proof carrier are allowed, capped at four pets per flight and stowed under window seats 18A, 18F, 20A and 20F for the entire journey.
  • Cats are currently permitted only on MelbourneSunshine Coast flights, and pets must meet health and age requirements that can include vaccination proof or a veterinary certificate.
  • Bookings must be made via Virgin Australia’s Guest Contact Centre at least 72 hours before departure, with a $149 one-way fee in addition to the passenger fare.
  • Virgin reports strong early demand, will collect feedback during the pilot, and notes that Qantas and Jetstar continue to allow only service animals in cabins.
