Virgin Australia Begins Pets-in-Cabin Trial on Select Melbourne Routes

The time-limited program will gauge demand on two Melbourne routes, with rivals declining to copy the policy.

Overview

  • The trial launched today on flights between Melbourne and the Gold Coast and Melbourne and the Sunshine Coast, marking Australia’s first in-cabin pet service.
  • Up to four pets are permitted per flight, each under 8kg including a soft-sided, leak-proof carrier (maximum 44cm by 26cm) that must stay under the seat for the entire journey.
  • Cats are prohibited on MelbourneGold Coast flights but are eligible on other trial services, and all pets must be at least eight weeks old and up to date on vaccinations.
  • The trial runs until January 30, 2026, with Virgin Australia planning to add more domestic routes later in 2026 if the program proves workable.
  • Bookings opened last month with frequent-flyer points allowed and strong interest for summer holidays, while Qantas and Jetstar maintain cabins for service dogs only.
