Virgen de las Mercedes Returns to Restored Paita Basilica After More Than a Decade

The reopening follows a publicly funded rehabilitation led by the municipality with Archdiocesan coordination to improve access and safety for pilgrims.

  • The Provincial Council of Paita and the Archdiocese of Piura approved S/1,543,450.43 in June to finance the improvement works.
  • Rehabilitation was supervised by Ing. Leonardo Fernández Lorren and executed by Barrantes Arquitectura y Construcción, led by Ing. Eduardo Barrantes Urrelo.
  • Upgrades included paving more than 3,500 m² of the explanada, improved accesses with retaining walls and stairs, restored perimeter fencing, and new lighting.
  • Pilgrim flows intensified for the Sept. 24 feast during the 2025 Jubilee Year, with health posts and police support along the PiuraPaita route and a central Mass led by Monseñor Guillermo Elías Millares.
