Violent Typhoon 30 Headed Toward Sakishima Islands

Its exceptional size and strength raise urgent risks of coastal flooding, river flooding, landslides, storm surge and high waves as it nears the islands.

Overview

  • Japan’s meteorological agencies reported on Wednesday that Typhoon 30 has a central pressure near 900 hPa with maximum sustained winds around 60 m/s and gusts to about 85 m/s.
  • Forecasts show the typhoon moving west‑northwest and expected to approach the Sakishima Islands, including Ishigaki and Yonaguni, on Oct. 23–24 with a high chance of formal warnings.
  • Wide wind fields extend hundreds of kilometers from the center, with violent‑wind zones reaching roughly 240 km to the northeast and 185 km to the southwest and strong winds felt even farther out.
  • The Okinawa Meteorological Observatory has urged strict vigilance and warned of likely heavy rain, storm surge, high waves and landslides that could cause coastal and river flooding and inundation of low‑lying areas.
  • Models show a possible eastward turn after the southern islands that could bring the storm closer to western Japan around Oct. 25–26, so authorities and residents should monitor forecasts for track changes and local warnings.
